Admirael van Tol

This tulip species no longer exists. However, a much simpler tulip from the same grower still exists. Duc van Tol is still being cultivated in the Hortus Bulborum.

The tulip is named after the jurist and collector Martinus or Maerten van Tol († 1636/7) from Leiden. He had a garden full of tulips and a collection of books and geometric instruments.

Van Tol believed that his Admirael was much more valuable than his Duc. However, that tulip turned out to be much less durable.
