Once, there was a tulip named “Schoon Solffer”, meaning ‘beautiful sulfer’.
This tulip was a striking sight with its bright yellow and orange colors, resembling flames, which gave it its name, referring to ‘beautiful sulfur colors’ – a nod to the vibrant color of sulfur.
The renowned Dutch artist of that time, Bartholomeus Abrahamsz (1607-1667), captured the beauty of “Schoon Solffer” on canvas. Abrahamsz, who personally witnessed the tulip mania, likely chose this special tulip as a subject due to its unique and vivid color.
Sulfur, a chemical element known since ancient times, has played diverse roles throughout history, from its use in alchemy to its crucial role in gunpowder’s invention and modern industrial applications. In our tulip story, ‘Sulfur’ embodies the rich yellow and orange colors of its namesake element.
The portrait of the “Schoon Solffer”, from the ‘Ninetynine Tulips’ collection, serves as the inspiration for the tulip NFT collections. The theme of the 99 ‘Solffer’ NFT tulips is ‘sulfer.’
