The “Root en Geel van Leijden” tulip, recognizable by its red-yellow stripes, was one of the most enduring varieties during the Tulipmania in the 17th century.
Although this variety was cultivated until the end of the 19th century, it is unfortunately extinct nowadays. This unique tulip originated in Leiden.
Leiden, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, is a city rich in history and architectural beauty. It is also the city where Carolus Clusius, the famous 16th-century botanist, introduced the tulip to the Dutch. He planted the first tulip bulbs in the Hortus Botanicus of Leiden University, which contributed to the later Tulipmania.
Leiden, also known as the ‘Sleutelstad’ (Key city), owes its nickname to the two crossed keys in the city’s coat of arms.
The portrait of the “Root en Geel van Leijden”, from the ‘Ninetynine Tulips’ collection, serves as the inspiration for the tulip NFT collections. The theme of the 99 ‘Root en Geel van Leijden’ NFT tulips is ‘key’.
