No 43. Anvers

The “Anvers”, named after the city of Antwerp, is a striking tulip from the time of the legendary Dutch Tulipmania.

The choice of the name ‘Anvers’, the French term for Antwerp, refers to the influential role that this city played in the early history of the tulip in Europe.

In the 16th century, long before the Tulipmania reached its peak in the Netherlands, Antwerp served as a major trading and artistic center. It was here that the first tulips from Turkey found their way to the European continent. The famous botanist Carolus Clusius, who later inundated the Netherlands with tulips, initially worked in the vicinity of Antwerp.

The ‘Anvers’ tulip symbolizes this early period. Its name may serve as a tribute to the city that sparked the Dutch love for tulips.

Although the Tulipmania was a phenomenon mainly occurring in the Netherlands, the ‘Anvers’ tulip illustrates how Antwerp contributed to the emergence and growth of tulip culture in Europe.

The portrait of the “Anvers”, from the ‘Ninetynine Tulips’ collection, serves as the model for the corresponding NFT collection. The “Anvers” NFT tulips are themed around the city of ‘Antwerp’.
