No 46. Kamelot van Echmont

During the 17th century, at the height of the Tulipmania, tulips often had intriguing and remarkable names.

These names not only reflected the characteristics of the flowers but also expressed the spirit of the times and the social context in which they were cultivated and traded.

In some cases, like the tulip “Kamelot van Egmond,” the name of a tulip was derived from a historical figure. Claes Corneliszoon van Egmond, nicknamed Kamelot, was an adventurer and pirate from the 16th century, whose life story captured the imagination of the Dutch in the 17th century.

The tulip named after this pirate recounts the adventures of ‘Kamelot van Egmond.’

The portrait of “Kamelot”, from the ‘Ninetynine Tulips’ collection, serves as inspiration for the eponymous NFT-collection. The 99 “Kamelot van Egmond” NFT tulips are themed ‘pirate’.
