No 48. Rotgans

During the Tulipmania in the 17th century, there was a tulip named the ‘Rotgans’.

Named after the small, compact goose with dark plumage, this tulip is a stunning contrast of vibrant colors. Bright white petals, sprinkled with splashes of vivid red, evoke the image of a rotgans in full flight.

It is not known if the tulip owes its name directly to the bird, but it is plausible that the grower was inspired by the natural world. The goose is a native species in the Netherlands. The bright colors of the “Rotgans” tulip undoubtedly capture the lively character of the bird of the same name.

The “Rotgans” tulip was a familiar sight in the tulip books of that time. The story of the ‘Rotgans’ tulip largely remains untold, its history hidden in the beautiful watercolors of old tulip books.

The portrait of the “Rotgans”, from the ‘Ninetynine Tulips’ collection, serves as inspiration for the eponymous NFT-collection. The 99 ‘Rotgans’ NFT tulips are themed ‘goose’.
