No 54. Admirael de France

The third and final of the three unique tulips in the ‘Ninetynine Tulips’ collection depicted solely by the flower is the “Admirael de France”.

This name evokes images of sea power and influence, much like the highest commander of France, the ‘Admiral of France’.

However, this was a rarely conferred honorific title, mainly reserved for the King of France himself.

Around the peak of the Tulipmania in 1636, Louis XIII was the King of France. He reigned from 1610 to 1643. Although this monarch is more known for his political struggles and religious conflicts than for maritime glory, he would have certainly embraced the title of ‘Admiral de France’ as a sign of his supreme command over all French armies, both on land and at sea.

Therefore, the theme of the 99 NFTs for the “Admirael de France” in various art styles, is a tribute to Louis XIII and the 17th-century French kingdom. The NFTs are thus themed ‘King of France’.
