No 6. Machedeken van Enchuijze

This tulip is named the “Machedeken van Enchuijze”, which means ‘Maiden of Enkhuizen’. Enkhuizen was a significant city in 17th-century Holland.

The Maiden of Enkhuizen is the symbol of the city, which dates back to the Middle Ages and has a rich history, particularly linked to shipping and fishing.

Above the portal of an old city gate of Enkhuizen, there is a statue of the maiden holding a coat of arms depicting three herrings. The statue plays a role in a local legend. According to this legend, the city will never be taken as long as the maiden remains intact.

The portrait of the “Machedeken van Enchuijze”, from the ‘Ninetynine Tulips’ collection, serves as the inspiration for the tulip NFT collections. The theme of the 99 ‘Machedeken’ NFT tulips is ‘virgin’.
