No 69. Soomerschoon

The next tulip in our series is the “Soomerschoon”, a name that we would translate from Old Dutch as ‘Summer beauty’.

This immediately conjures images of the warm, vibrant colors we often associate with the summer season.

This name suggests that this tulip was a late bloomer, a tulip that, so to speak, heralded the arrival of summer with its late spring bloom.

The “Soomerschoon” was a beloved tulip during the Tulipmania period. It is one of the few tulip varieties from the 17th century that has survived to this day. The ‘Summer beauty’, as we would call it now, is still cultivated in the Hortus Bulborum in Limmen, a living testament to the enduring beauty and allure of this remarkable flower.

The theme of the 99 NFT tulips in different art styles for the “Soomerschoon” is ‘summer’, a tribute to the vibrant colors and warmth of this beloved season.
