The “Admirael de Man” is an intriguing example of the unpredictability and excessiveness of Tulipmania.
Although this tulip met the beauty standards of the time with its broken color pattern and fine stripes, it was considered a ‘lesser’ tulip. Nevertheless, it too was swept up in the frenzy of the mania.
In the fall of 1636, this tulip was worth only 15 guilders, a relatively modest amount compared to the prices paid for ‘top’ tulips. However, within a short span of time, its value soared to as much as 175 guilders by February 1637. This elevenfold price increase illustrates how even the ‘lesser’ tulips participated in the unprecedented price inflation of Tulipmania.
The 99 NFTs in different art styles for the “Admirael de Man” have a theme based on the Dutch surname ‘de Man’ (the Man). The portrait of the “Admirael de Man” from the ‘Ninetynine Tulips’ collection, serves as the model for the ‘de Man’ NFTs.
