The tulip grower Liefkens was a well-known figure during the Tulipmania. Several tulips from that time bear his name.
The most popular tulip was the “Admirael Liefkens,” which fetched a significant amount at the time.
With a price of up to fl4,400 guilders (equivalent to about €61,000 today), this tulip was more expensive than the average house at that time.
Another tulip named ‘Liefkens’ is the “Gemarmerde Liefkens.” Although this tulip is less well-known than the “Admirael Liefkens,” it has its own charm.
The “Gemarmerde Liefkens” is based on an illustration from a tulip book owned by the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. This book contains over 40 illustrations of different tulips, including the “Vroege Brabantson” by Judith Leyster.
The 99 NFTs in various art styles for the “Gemarmerde Liefkens” have the theme ‘lovers’. The term “Liefkens” is Old Dutch and is no longer used in modern Dutch. It means “darlings” or “lovers”. The portrait of the Gemarmerde Liefkens from the ‘Ninetynine Tulips’ collection, serves as inspiration for the Liefkens NFTs.
