The “Admirael van Eijck” is another beautiful tulip from the 17th century.
Characterized by its white petals with delicate light red stripes, this tulip is a stunning specimen from that time period.
Presumably, the “Admirael van der Eijck” was bred by a grower named ‘Van Eijck’. Tulips with a reference to ‘Eijck’ in the name were often found in the sales records. This tulip was therefore a well-known presence during the Tulipmania.
A specimen of the tulip “Admirael van der Eijck” was sold on February 5, 1637, for fl.1,045 guilders, which is approximately €13,250 euros today. This was right around the time when the famous Tulipmania imploded.
When the bubble burst, it triggered a chain reaction of financial chaos among speculators and growers – many refused to pay their debts for the expensive tulip bulbs. It is quite possible that the mentioned amount was never paid, or that a settlement was reached after numerous lawsuits.
The theme of the 99 NFTs in various art styles for the “Admirael van Eijck” is ‘acorn’, a reference to the oak tree, to which the grower’s surname can be linked. The portrait of the “Admirael van der Eijck” from the ‘Ninetynine Tulips’ collection, serves as inspiration for the tulip NFTs.
