Card Series

Ninetynine Tulips is a physical collection of 99 tulip paintings, based on tulips that existed around 300 years ago. These are depictions of tulips that played a role during the Tulipmania— the cultural and economic storm that accompanied the introduction of the tulip to the Netherlands.

Each tulip carries a story. Sometimes literally as an icon (Semper Augustus), sometimes connected to a place (Root en Geel van Leijden), sometimes to a person (Duc van Tol), and sometimes simply through a name such as Speramundi — Hope for the World.

I continue to build on Ninetynine Tulips as an ongoing project: a growing tulip world in which painting, Dutch history and imagination come together. Inspired by the paintings, I develop tulip card series (of 99 cards) — in different styles and forms.

The ownership and digital authenticity of the tulip cards are recorded using tokens (NFTs). Independent of the hype, tokens have become for me a contemporary form of certification for my artistic works.

Tokens add layers and connect works to one another. The digital tulip work stands on its own, while also providing access to the larger, unfolding narrative of Ninetynine Tulips.
